Outbound Citation Density: Backing Up Claims with Sources
Why linking to external sources makes AI more likely to trust and cite your content.
What it measures
This metric counts the number of external links within your main content body that cite sources, research, or authoritative references.
Why it matters for AI
Outbound citations signal to AI that your content is well-researched and connected to the broader knowledge ecosystem. Pages that cite their sources are seen as more trustworthy and authoritative. When GPTBot or ClaudeBot encounters a claim backed by a link to a published study, it has much higher confidence in citing your page as a source.
| Citations | Score | AI perception |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Poor | Claims appear unsupported |
| 1–2 | Average | Some evidence, but could be stronger |
| ≥ 3 | Good | Well-researched, trustworthy |
How to improve
- Link to original sources — When citing statistics, link to the actual study or report
- Reference published research — Academic papers, industry reports, and official documentation add authority
- Cite authoritative industry sources — Link to recognised organisations and well-known publications
